Excuse Me While I Kiss the Sky
Today, many Americans will focus their gaze upon the sky. THE GREAT AMERICAN SOLAR ECLIPSE IS FINALLY HERE, where the sun will be eclipsed by the moon, with a path of totality that will stretch across the entire country, from the west coast to the east coast. For those lucky enough to live or have traveled to areas within the 12 states that will experience a TOTAL eclipse can expect total darkness for a few minutes today. This will cause a stir in wildlife and even some humans may get a bit restless!
So, what is a solar eclipse exactly?
t’s when, following a course charted before the dawn of history, the moon will pass between the sun and the Earth and cast a shadow across a wide stretch of land. Those within its path will experience a total blackout, while others further flung from the path will experience a percentage of totality, based on your proximity from the path. For those experiencing a partial eclipse, the moon won’t pass directly over the sun from that vantage point, so a percentage of slivers of the sun will still be visible.
Eclipse chasers such as Mike Kentrianakis, solar eclipse manager for the American Astronomical Society, calls it “the most gorgeous natural wonder you will ever see.” He describes the experience as follows:
“The sky darkens. The temperature drops. And where the sun should be, people will see instead a black circle, ringed by a halo of light. That halo, called the sun’s corona, consists of a writhing mass of exceedingly hot gas in the sun’s atmosphere, invisible under normal circumstances.
‘It unlocks you,’ said Kentrianakis, who has witnessed 20 eclipses across the world. “It is so visceral. It is the meaning of the word awe, awe-struck.”
So, enjoy, America! Eclipse Mania is Here, Boiled to a Fever Pitch!
All that is now All that is gone All that's to come and everything under the sun is in tune but the sun is eclipsed by the moon.
We’ll see you on the Dark Side of the Moon.
